Summary: If somewhere in the dark
I am alone
Will you come to me
bringing me your light?
And never leave me
waiting on my own
but stay with me
till the morning light?
Length: 451 words
Rating: PG13-ish
Notes: Written for a song challenge on the Bathhouse. Inspired by Sonnet in the Dark by The Flash Girls. Not happy, and no, I don't know what I was thinking.
If somewhere in the dark
I am alone
Will you come to me
bringing me your light?
And never leave me
waiting on my own
but stay with me
till the morning light?
"Yukiko, you have to hold on." Yukiko's hand is warm and slippery, red, everything is red.
"You... don't look so good yourself."
"It's nothing, it's nothing, I'm fine, but you-"
"Was it... worth it?" It seems like Yukiko isn't looking straight at her, not at anything in particular. Her face is pale, white like snow against the dark of her hair, against the red.
"It was worth it." Her voice cracks, her throat aches and her eyes burn, but there are no tears. "Everything was worth it..." It was worth it with you. It was worth it because... But even now, she can't come out and say it.
A gasp, maybe laughter, brief and cut short. "But we lost."
"No." She shakes her head, but knows that Yukiko won't see it. "No," she repeats, with more determination, and now the tears finally come. "We did not lose. We didn't, you hear me? We, we won and you were - you were glorious..."
"You say funny things." And that short, gasping laugh again, and a wince, because it hurts, it must hurt so much, even just that little, and she bites her lip and feels like a cold blade saws through her chest. Swallows and tries to say something, anything, but her jaw trembles too much. They sit in silence, hands clasped, fingers intertwined, as the minutes bleed away and the world gradually grows brighter. Until a familiar light ignites on the horizon, signalling the arrival of a new day.
"Look, Yukiko." Her voice sounds thin and cracked. "The sun is coming up..."
"Tell me about it," Yukiko whispers, hand trembling. "Is it warm?"
"It... it's warm, Yukiko, it's warm, and it's so bright..."
And she describes it, as the sun rises. The gold and red, the way it paints the grass, the trees, the sky in vivid colours, the beauty of it all.
Describes the orb of fire rising over the horizon and the warmth on her skin even as Yukiko's hand grows cold in her grasp.
Continues to describe it even as her sight grows dim.
When she has no more words, she lies next to Yukiko and looks closely at her face. She looks so peaceful, almost... almost happy. Asleep, perhaps, and dreaming of something beautiful.
It's a small comfort.
She still clasps Yukiko's hand to her chest as she lowers her head and, one last time, closes her eyes.
We will wait together
in the dusk...
...and hold each other
while we turn to dust.
I am alone
Will you come to me
bringing me your light?
And never leave me
waiting on my own
but stay with me
till the morning light?
